Ice Harvesting on Madison's Lakes
Annual Meeting May 5th

Ann Waidelich will present a PowerPoint program on ice harvesting on Madison's lakes for the HBGHS Annual Meeting on Sunday May 5th at 2 pm at the Dean House.

From about 1870 through the 1930s ice harvesting, storing and shipping was a major activity on the Madison lakes in late January and February. Out of work farmers and construction workers could find employment even if the work was cold, wet and dangerous.

Ann will share a Capital Times article about Fred Walterscheit who, as a teenager, was paid to use the family's horse and a scraper to clear the ice in front of his parent's house at 3722 Atwood Ave. so that the ice could be harvested.

5th Annual Garage Sale May 17 & 18

Our participation in the Monona City-Wide Garage Sale has gotten bigger and better every year. We have already collected many items for this year's sale highlighted by a significant donation of antiques from Mary Lou Martino. But that doesn't mean that you can't contribute! We can always use MORE items. The only restrictions on donations are -- no clothing, shoes or electronics.

You can drop off your items on the Back Porch of the Dean House beginning Monday May 13th. If you need help getting your items to the Dean House or have questions call Judith Bodden 222-6831.

We will need volunteers at the Dean House on Thursday May 16th to price and arrange items for the sale and salespeople on Friday and Saturday. If you can help, just drop in and offer your services.
